The Uninvited (2009)
Synopsis:
A deadly battle of wills begins when Anna returns from a psychiatric facility and investigates the circumstances surrounding her mother’s suspicious and untimely death. While Anna recuperates from the tragedy, her father becomes engaged to Rachel, her mother’s former nurse, and moves her into their home. Anna’s dismay quickly turns to horror when she is visited by her mother’s ghost–crying out for revenge and pointing an accusing finger at Rachel. When her father refuses to heed their warnings, Anna and her sister, Alex, look into Rachel’s questionable past. But Anna may be underestimating Rachel–perhaps fatally so.

Synopsis:
Lucy Hill is an ambitious, up and coming executive living in Miami. She loves her shoes, she loves her cars and she loves climbing the corporate ladder. When she is offered a temporary assignment–in the middle of nowhere–to restructure a manufacturing plant, she jumps at the opportunity, knowing that a big promotion is close at hand. Inkheart (PG) Review
Story
Based on Cornelia Funke’s best-selling children’s book, Inkheart takes its literary inspirations literally. It revolves around a father, Mortimer “Mo” Folchart (Brendan Fraser) and his 12-year-old daughter Meggie (Eliza Hope Bennett), who share a gift — or curse — of being able to make characters leap out of the pages just by reading aloud. Unfortunately, whenever they do this, a real person must then be transferred into the book as a replacement. It can get complicated, especially when Mo accidentally sends his wife (Sienna Guillory) into a book called Inkheart, only to bring out its villains to wreak havoc on the real world. He spends the next nine years, trying to find another copy of the book and bring her back, while one of the book’s main characters, Dustfinger (Paul Bettany), follows Mo, trying to get back into the book. An adventure waiting to happen!
Acting
The entire cast is wonderfully in tune with the whimsical tone of this inventive and clever story. Fraser doesn’t stretch any acting muscles but serves the film well as its central father figure and hero. Bettany (Master and Commander), as the literary sidekick Dustfinger, steals the whole show, giving his character heaping amounts of irony, warmth and humanity. Joining them is Helen Mirren, who adds an element of elegance and uptightness as the great aunt swept along for the ride. Andy Serkis (LOTR’s Gollum) is properly villainous throughout, while Brit Jim Broadbent (Iris) is daffy and hilarious as the author of Inkheart, who keeps complicating matters for everyone.
Direction
Inkheart uses sheer imaginative filmmaking prowess with an engaging story that feels as original and fresh as it does familiar. Director Iain Softley (Wings of the Dove) makes the most of the colorful European locations, including the picturesque Italian Riviera, transformed into storybook heaven. The film is well-paced, carrying a great subtle message about the powers of reading and creative writing. Much like the Oscar-nominated The Reader — a wildly different kind of movie to be sure — this film shows the joys of getting lost, and in this case, found in the world of books.
Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans Review
Story
Taking the bare bones of The Ten Commandments and Romeo and Juliet, this pedestrian tale explains the origins of Lucian (Michael Sheen), a “Lycan” (read: lycanthrope), who served the vicious vampire king Viktor (Bill Nighy) but would eventually lead a revolt of his fellow Lycans (read: slaves) after his illicit affair with Viktor’s daughter Sonja (Rhona Mitra) was revealed. From this, the war between vampires and werewolves would be waged for generations to come, depicted in Underworld and Underworld: Evolution. Those unfamiliar with the previous films might be a little lost here, and it’s highly unlikely that Rise of the Lycans will win many new fans to the franchise.
Acting
With his glow-in-the-dark eyes and penchant for delivering every syllable with relish, Nighy does his best to enliven things, but there’s not much to work with — and hamminess only goes so far. Sheen’s female fans may enjoy seeing him shaggy and occasionally shirtless, but if The Queen and Frost/Nixon proved he’s capable of doing good work with good material, this proves that, at least, he can cash in with bad material. Mitra, who survived the rigors of Doomsday, is fit and fetching here. But performances are not this movie’s strong suit. Very little is.
Direction
This marks the directorial debut of award-winning production designer Patrick Tatopoulos (who also supervised the creature design), so it’s no surprise that the film is steeped in medieval atmosphere and loaded with CGI effects. Beyond that, it’s a crashing bore — even with the gore.

Of course, we can’t discount this year’s underdog, the indie hit Slumdog Millionaire, earned 10 nominations. The poignant drama about an impoverished Indian teen who ends up on a TV game show earned nods for Best Picture, Director for Danny Boyle and Adapted Screenplay for Simon Beaufoy.
Runner ups included Milk — about slain gay-rights activist Harvey Milk — and the Batman thriller The Dark Knight, which received eight nominations apiece. And one year to the day after he died at age 28 of a drug overdose, Heath Ledger earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance as the Joker.

Synopsis:
Former government operative Bryan Mills begins the longest 96-hours of his life–and the hunt for the fearsome organization that has taken his daughter Kim. Mills had only recently given up his government career as what he calls a “preventer” to be near Kim, who lives with Bryan’s ex-wife Lenore and her new husband. To make ends meet, Bryan joins some former colleagues for special security details (like guarding a pop diva), but most of his time and energy are spent re-connecting with Kim. Bryan’s familial goal is nearly derailed when Kim requests his permission to spend time in Paris with a friend. All too aware of the dangers that could lie ahead for Kim in a foreign land, Bryan says no, but Kim’s disappointment leads him to very reluctantly relent. Bryan’s worst fears are realized when Kim and her friend Amanda are suddenly abducted–in broad daylight–from the Paris apartment at which they’ve just arrived. Moments before Kim is dragged away by the as yet unseen and unknown assailants, she manages to phone Bryan, who begins to expertly piece together clues that will take him to the darkness of Paris’s underworld, and to the City of Light’s plushest mansions. He will face nightmares worse than anything he experienced in black ops–and let nothing and no one stop him from saving his daughter.

Synopsis:
Mortimer “Mo” Folchart and his 12-year-old daughter, Meggie, share a passion for books. What they also share is an extraordinary gift for bringing characters from books to life when they read aloud. But there is a danger: when a character is brought to life from a book, a real person disappears into its pages. On one of their trips to a secondhand book shop, Mo hears voices he hasn’t heard for years, and when he locates the book they’re coming from, it sends a shiver up his spine. It’s Inkheart, a book filled with illustrations of medieval castles and strange creatures–a book he’s been searching for since Meggie was three years old, when her mother, Resa, vanished into its mystical world. But Mo’s plan to use the book to find and rescue Resa is thwarted when Capricorn, the evil villain of Inkheart, kidnaps Meggie and, discovering she has inherited her father’s gift, demands that she bring his most powerful ally to life–the Shadow. Determined to rescue his daughter and send the fictional characters back where they belong, Mo assembles a small group of friends and family–some from the real world, some from the pages of books–and embarks on a daring and perilous journey to set things right.

2009 Oscar Predictions: Previewing the Best Films of 2008

Well, what better time to look ahead than the day after the big show. Last year, we correctly forecast “Atonement” as a Best Picture nominee one-year-in-advance. Two years ago, we nailed “The Departed.” This year, we hope to improve on our track record. As you will see, there are some heavy hitters coming up later in 2008, films with big stars AND big directors. It could be one of the most competitive seasons in recent Oscar history. Here are the names of the Best Picture films we think will be announced on nominations morning.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Paramount)
David Fincher directs Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett in this story, based on a F. Scott Fitzgerald book, about a man who ages in reverse. The concept sounds positively intriguing to us and every single major player attached is coming off a big hit. Fincher directed last year’s underrated “Zodiac,” Blanchett was nominated twice for “The Golden Age” and “I’m Not There” and Brad Pitt exceeded expectations in “The Assasination of Jesse James.” The film also features current Supporting Actress winner Tilda Swinton. Put them all together and it could be nothing short of magic.
Australia (20th Century Fox)
After a long hiatus, Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge) is back with this epic love story about two people who embark on a journey herding cattle across the outback, and then must survive numerous obstacles including bombing by Japanese forces. Once again, Luhrmann has enlisted the services of his leading lady Nicole Kidman and teamed her with the versatile Hugh Jackman. We have little doubt the chemistry will be there between the co-stars, so the big question is whether the historical elements will mix in well with the personal story. Luhrmann’s attention to detail should hopefully make the film more “Gladiator” than “Alexander.”
The Reader (The Weinstein Company)
Based on the best-selling book by Bernard Schlink, the story chronicles the relationship between a young boy and a woman accused of Nazi war crimes. The story spans many decades and takes many turns along the way. Stephen Daldry (The Hours) directs Academy Award nominees Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes. This film screams prestige and bears some resemblance to “Atonement.” The big challenge will be whether it can satisfy fans of the book. We think it will.
The Changeling (Universal)
Clint Eastwood is back and that usually strikes fear in the hearts of other directors with hopes of adding a gold statute to their collection. This time, he’s got a story about a mother whose son is kidnapped. When he is returned, she starts to suspect that it is not really him. Angelina Jolie plays the mom and Academy Award nominee Amy Ryan also has a meaningful role. At first glance, the story seems more mystery and suspense than drama, but Eastwood is always a wizard at creating powerful, conflicted characters and fleshing out deeper themes in the story. It’s Mystic River meets Gone Baby Gone and to us, that’s a winning combination.
Revolutionary Road (Paramount, Dreamworks)
This is the big one. The director is Sam Mendes, Academy Award winner for American Beauty. The co-stars are Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. You might remember them from somewhere. The story is about a married couple who have to deal with the realities of life during the depression era while raising their two small children. It’s based on a novel by Richard Yates. As of present, the film is already positioned for a mid-December release, perfect timing for next year’s Oscar season. When you reunite arguably the best young actor and actress of our generation in a story that seems to have so many potential layers, we are absolutely sold.
So now, let’s take a look at the individual races and make some projections.
Best Actor:
Sean Penn will be a contender for playing gay activist Harvey Milk in “Milk” and Benicio Del Toro will undoubtedly shine as legendary Che Guevara in “The Argentine,” but Leo is so overdue and he could ride a “Revolutionary” sweep to the podium.
Best Actress:
The array of strong contenders here is mind-blowing. You have past winners Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, and Cate Blanchett. You have rising star Keira Knightley in the costume drama “The Duchess.” And then you have Kate Winslet possibly competing against herself in “The Reader” and “Revolutionary Road.” The five time nominee finally gets her award for the latter.
Best Supporting Actor:
Even before his unexpected death, people were wowing over his masterful and unique portrayal of the Joker in “The Dark Knight.” It will be very hard, we feel, for the Academy to pass up this opportunity to pay tribute to a great character actor, the talented Heath Ledger.
Best Supporting Actress:
Amy Ryan came so close to winning this past year as the mother of a kidnapped child in the edgy “Gone Baby Gone.” Now, she’s got a wonderful part in Eastwood’s Best Picture contender “The Changeling.” And we all know how good Eastwood is at getting his actors hardware.
Best Director:
Sorry Clint Eastwood. But you do already have two Best Director trophies. It’s time to make way for a new face to join the two-win club. Sam Mendes will triumph for “Revolutionary Road.”
Best Picture:
And it all comes down to this, right? “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” for its innovative storyline and probable stylish feel, has a shot. And we foresee a tight two film race. But in the end, we think 2008 will see a single film plow through everything in its path, reminiscent of a “Schindler’s List,” “English Patient,” or appropriately, “Titanic.” Yes, it is very difficult to be the early front runner and it’s likely “Revolutionary Road” will carry that burden the entire way through. But somehow, with that creative team on board, we think they have the goods to go all the way. “Revolutionary Road” is your 2009 Oscar Best Picture winner.

Synopsis:
Ten years ago, a tragedy changed the town of Harmony forever. Tom Hanniger, an inexperienced coal miner, caused an accident in the tunnels that trapped and killed five men and sent the only survivor, Harry Warden, into a permanent coma. Then, exactly one year later, on Valentine’s Day, Harry Warden woke up–and brutally murdered twenty-two people with a pickaxe before being killed. Story
Dave Johnson’s (Morris Chestnut) dreams of playing in the major leagues have long been dashed and now he’s left to coach Little League and try to make a go of his modest construction firm. He’s a good guy, but after more than a decade of marriage, he’s is constantly harassed by his successful realtor/wife Clarice (Taraji P. Henson) and her obnoxious mother, Mary (Jenifer Lewis). A tragic automobile accident brings things to a marital boiling point — Clarice becomes housebound with severe leg injuries, and Dave just might be attracted to the physical therapist Julie (Maeve Quinlan), a white single mother who has arrived to help out.
Acting
Based on T.D. Jakes’ religious themed book Woman Thou Art Loosed , this intense and old fashioned drama offers some meaty roles to some fine actors, and they run with the opportunity — particularly Chestnut, who displays such warmth and likeability he seems almost too good to be true. Henson (The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Hustle and Flow) has had a few good screen outings of late but probably could have taken it down just a notch to make Clarice just a little more empathetic. You almost wonder how poor Dave has lasted so long with this woman. Ditto Lewis. On the other hand, the warm and understanding Quinlan is the perfect counterpoint, pointing out a real crisis of conscience for Dave. Welcome comic relief comes in the form of his buddies, Eddie Cibrian and particularly the highly amusing Kevin Hart. And watch for a restaurant-scene cameo by Jakes.
Direction
Fortunately, actor turned director Bill Duke knows how to rein in this tricky marital story and make its most important message — tolerance and perseverance in relationships –somehow ring true. There may not be a whole lot of subtlety in this particular tale (or many of Jakes books in general), but it’s an agreeable and engrossing affair that’s worthy of attention from anyone involved in a long term relationship. And it’s certainly refreshing for once to see this kind of romantic drama played out almost entirely from the male point of view.

Story
Attractive college co-ed Casey (Odette Yustman) finds herself the target of the diabolical Dybbuk, a spirit which has bided its time since her birth to make its nefarious presence known. Is it perhaps a manifestation of her twin brother, who died in the womb all those years ago? Since dear old Dad (James Remar) is away on business — seemingly for the entire length of the movie — concerned Casey seeks answers from Sofi Kozma (Jane Alexander), a survivor of the Holocaust who may hold the key to Casey’s past. Needless to say, those to whom Casey confides her fears often find themselves in danger of being offed in gruesome fashion. (Misery may love company, but the Dybbuk doesn’t.) In a last-ditch effort to rid herself of the evil spirit, Casey turns to Rabbi Sendak (Gary Oldman), who finally agrees to perform an exorcism after he, too, sees the signs.
Acting
Aside from acting terrified (and looking good doing it), Yustman (Cloverfield) is totally at the mercy of the story, which shows little mercy when it comes to providing any concrete (or even shaky) answers to the questions it raises. She’s attractive, but there’s not much else to the character. As Casey’s respective boyfriend and best friend, Cam Gigandet (Twilight) and Meagan Good (Saw V) are merely functionaries, offering the typical mixture of skepticism and support before learning for themselves — too late, of course! — that maybe Casey’s suspicions have validity. Adding a (misplaced?) touch of class to the proceedings are Oldman, who doesn’t embarrass himself, and Alexander, who isn’t so fortunate. It’s also a wonder why Carla Gugino, seen occasionally in flashback as Casey’s deceased mother, even bothered. It’s a nothing role, which might explain why the actress has no billing other than in the end credits.
Direction
There’s no question that writer/director David S. Goyer has a deep love and appreciation for horror and science-fiction, given his previous credits, which include the scripts for Dark City, Blade and The Dark Knight, but as a director his work (which includes Blade: Trinity and last year’s The Invisible) leaves much to be desired. There are some good ideas here, and some individual scenes are reasonably effective, but the parts don’t add up to a satisfactory whole. The Unborn suffers from a botched delivery.

Story
Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathaway) are lifelong best friends obsessed with getting married — and more importantly, having the perfect wedding at New York’s Plaza Hotel. Except there’s a glitch: Their June weddings get scheduled for the same Saturday and no other date is available for three years! When neither agrees to move to a different venue, the battle is on. And the pranks: There’s Emma’s disastrous trip to a tanning salon where her skin becomes solid orange and Liv’s appointment at a beauty salon where her blonde locks are turned mysteriously blue.
Acting
Adding this to her recent list of dumb comedies like My Best Friend’s Girl and Fool’s Gold, Hudson is in need of a serious career intervention. Her character here, a supposedly smart lawyer who will sink to ANY depths to get married and have a dream wedding just doesn’t mesh. It’s SO 50 years ago that feminists watching these two engage in a knock-down drag-out fight over a hotel ballroom will recoil in horror. And after all that acclaim for Rachel Getting Married, Hathaway should just find a place to hide – though, to be fair, in one or two scenes she does manage to find a shred of believability. Too bad it’s not nearly enough.

Although it starts out with a bit of promise, director Gary Winick clearly just sat back as the proceedings spun out of control with one ridiculous scene after another. Of course, he isn’t given much help by Greg DePaul, CaseyWilson and June Diane Raphael’s waaaaaaay over-the-top screenplay which reduces these two apparent friends into babbling morons. Those interested in witnessing two women demean themselves for 90 minutes should have a lot of fun.
