The Damned United (2009)

The Damned United (2009)

Synopsis: Set in 1960’s and 1970’s England, tells the story of Brian Clough’s doomed 44 day tenure as manager of the reigning champions of English football Leeds United. Previously managed by his bitter rival Don Revie, and on the back of their most successful period ever as a football club, Leeds was perceived by many to represent a new aggressive and cynical style of football – an anathema to the principled yet flamboyant Brian Clough, who had achieved astonishing success as manager of Hartlepool and Derby County building teams in his own vision with trusty lieutenant Peter Taylor. Taking the Leeds job without Taylor by his side, with a changing room full of what in his mind were still Don’s boys, would lead to an unheralded examination of Clough’s belligerence and brilliance over 44 days.

Theater of War (2008)

Theater of War (2008)

Synopsis:

A look at the life and ideas of Bertolt Brecht, interwoven with The Public Theater’s staging of his “Mother Courage.”

In the summer of 2006, Meryl Streep took a time out from making movies, and she took on the role of a lifetime: the lead in Bertolt Brecht’s classic anti-war play Mother Courage and Her Children. And for the first time she allowed a camera crew to document her rehearsal process. Theater of War not only takes us back-stage with one of the greatest actresses of our time, it also takes us back in time, uncovering the story of Brecht’s flight from the Nazis, his years in exile, and his eventual return to Germany where he first staged Mother Courage. Along the way, Tony Award winning playwright Tony Kushner and others explore the terrifying theme of Brecht’s masterpiece: why does history repeat itself in an endless cycle of violence and warfare?

All of Us (2008)

Synopsis:

In the South Bronx, a young doctor embarks on a research project to find out why black women are being infected with the HIV virus at an alarming rate. Dr. Mehret Mandefro takes us into the lives and relationships of two of her female patients, Chevelle and Tara, as they identify and struggle with the social factors that put them at risk. Chevelle, abandoned by her family as a teenager, became addicted to drugs and dependent on sex with men to get attention and cash. When we meet her, she’s been clean for a year and is striving for financial independence. Tara suffered sexual abuse for much of her life and resorted to sex work to survive. Her current boyfriend is pressuring her for sex even though she is undergoing a series of invasive surgeries for cervical cancer. Despite her frail condition, Tara works to overcome her fear of saying no and gains new confidence along the way. As Chevelle and Tara strive for more power in their lives and relationships, Mehret expands her research to include women across boundaries of race, class and country. She also begins to grapple with these extremely personal themes as they appear in her own life. A visit to Ethiopia, her birthplace, and candid conversations with her privileged girlfriends in New York, yield a startling realization: heterosexual women across the continents face a dangerous power imbalance in the bedroom. When she lets her hair down, steps out of her doctor’s role, and confesses her own weaknesses, even this Harvard trained physician sounds just like one of us.

Heaven On Earth is not a negative story’

Heaven On Earth is not a negative story'
Heaven On Earth is not a negative story

Deepa Mehta certainly does not want her effigies burned by the Punjabis, especially in Canada [Images]. She says her new film Heaven on Earth, which follows the abused life of a newlywed Indian bride Chand (Preity Zinta) in Canada, is specific to a community but it has universal appeal.

“Abuse of women is not confined to just one community or a family,” she says. “And the film also makes clear that spousal abuse does not have to be physical. Verbal abuse is also terrifying and demeaning and it reduces the status of any woman in a relationship.”
She set the film in the Punjabi community for two reasons, she says, “I was born in a Punjabi family in Amritsar [Images], and I know the Punjabi language. I wanted to do film set in the community I know very well. It is easier to make an authentic film if you belong to the milieu and are familiar with it,” she said at the recently-concluded Toronto International Film Festival, where the film got quite popular.
But she also said the impetus for the film came from Mona Gill, who had met her at a film event in Edmonton over three years ago. Gill obviously knew of Mehta and the films she had made, including Fire and Water, which focused on the inequities women faced in India.
“Mona was an abused woman,” said Mehta, whose marriage to filmmaker Paul Saltzman ended in a bitter divorce about a decade ago. “But she fought her way through her immediate family as well as the larger society. She walked out of the abusive marriage after her daughter was born. She did not listen to people, who were keen on keeping up the so-called family honour.
“Many women, especially those of South Asian origin, do not go around publicising their bad marriages, even after ending them,” Mehta said. But Mona Gill was outspoken, and became a media celebrity across Canada. The National Board of Canada had recently made a documentary on Gill. “All my life in Canada [her home for more than 20 years] I have been aware of the abused women all around me,” Mehta continued.
She also told a film fan, who asked her about making the characters in Heaven on Earth Punjabi that she was led into making the film following her documentary, Let’s Talk About It, made three years ago. The documentary focused on women from three parts of the world, who had come to Canada for a better life. It told the story of Nigerian-born Nneka, whose husband’s final attack was so brutal — he tried to kill the 42 year-old lawyer by throwing her face down on the sofa so she could not breathe. It was the last time he would ever touch her.
There was also the story of Xiomara, from El Salvador, married and pregnant at 16, a scared teenager who would hide from her husband in a game of cat and mouse that would end after severe beating. His punches and kicks caused her to miscarry her first child.
Then there was Amandeep, whose arranged marriage in India, did not make her impotent in Canada. She found courage to seek help after her husband’s rage became physical and a source of escalating anger in her son.
Mehta made time to study the impact of domestic violence on children, especially in the case of Amandeep. “Children are our greatest teachers,” she had said at a press conference for the film, “and I hope this film helps to fuel meaningful action and commitment to stop the cycle of family abuse and give voice to every child and parent living in the unspoken despair of an abusive home.”
The documentary played an important role in nudging her to make Heaven on Earth. She also said that Heaven on Earth is not just about abused women. “It is also about immigration, isolation and the power of imagination in dealing with personal tragedies,” she said. In the second half of the film, a cobra appears in the guise of Chand’s husband and suddenly the husband seems to have become a loving and better person. Chand wonders whether she is facing reality or hallucinating.
“Most of us who came to Canada liked to believe that migration of women to this country affects their status, but it is not always so,” she says. “Chand’s life and her struggles mirror the life of many women belonging not only Indian but many communities including people from Europe.”
In India, Mehta said, family members can intervene to check the abuse. “But in their adopted land, many women are without a larger family network that has members, who can support them against abuse. Often they are surrounded by the husband’s families that are part of the abuse machinery. They [the abused women] take time to make friends and in many cases they are unable to make friends because their husbands and his family watches these women all the time.”
Her film is not a negative story, she asserted. “I think women can at least look at the means they can adopt to navigate their lives with dignity,” she said.

Synopsis:

The East St. John Wildcats, a small-town high school football team, looks within to brave the adversity delivered by Hurricane Katrina. Located just fifteen miles west of New Orleans, the tiny town of La Place escaped the cruel flooding of its neighbor only to suffer a different kind of flood, the overnight influx of 20,000 displaced hurricane victims. Its under-funded high school, East St. John, took in 450 “Displaced Students” and twenty of them joined the football team. With the first two games cancelled, the Wildcats and their twenty new displaced teammates, desperately short on equipment and practice time, were forced to take the field against archrival Hahnville in 100-plus degree heat. Can teenage boys blown together by the winds of Katrina overcome the tragedy of losing their homes and school? Can kids with vastly different racial, economic and religious backgrounds co-exist?

Synopsis:

About the filmmaker’s colonial roots in the American South. It begins with the impending move of Midway, the old family plantation in Raleigh to a new location to make room for a shopping mall. However, there is more to this plantation than just a historic house. The upheaval of moving coincides with the news that Godfrey and his cousins are kin to the Hintons, an African-American branch of the family. Ultimately, an investigation of heritage develops into an eye-opening family drama.

Virtual JFK: Vietnam If Kennedy Had Lived (2008)

Synopsis:

Investigates one of the most debated “what if” scenarios in the history of U.S. foreign policy: What would President John F. Kennedy have done in Vietnam if he had not been assassinated in 1963, and had he been re-elected in 1964? Employed is what Harvard historian Niall Ferguson calls “virtual history,” assessing the plausibility of counterfactuals–”what ifs”–and the outcomes they might have produced. Using an array of resources including recently declassified and never-before-seen archival footage, documents, and audio tapes, and testimony from a critical oral history conference, including Kennedy and Johnson administration officials, the question is asked: Does it matter who is president on issues of war and peace?
